Worms

We took a drive to Worms in southern Germany. It is one of the oldest cities in Northern Europe.

The Tower Bridge came upon us quickly, but we were able to get a quick photo. This gateway is in the middle of the bridge over the Rhein River.

Worms in famous in history because it was the place that the reformer, Martin Luther was excommunicated in 1521 by the Catholic Pope and declared an outlaw by the Holy Roman Emperor.
Luther had posted 95 Theses in 1517 on the door of a church in northern Germany.  These represented his disagreements with the Catholic Church in which he was an influential priest. He was spared arrest by a sympathetic Prince and lived in Warburg Castle.

The world's largest monument to the Reformation, inaugurated in 1868. Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress is our God", hewn in stone, frames the bronze statues.

Dave really is wearing a mask! It just may look like he has a beard ... stocking stuffer humor.

St. Peter's Cathedral in bronze.

St Peter's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church and former cathedral, The cathedral is located on the highest point of the inner city is the most important building of the Romanesque style in Worms.

This is a remnant of the old wall that protected this city.

Zone Christmas Dinner - Covid-19 Style

Zone Christmas Dinner 2020

Although circumstances prohibited the whole group from getting together, we enjoyed our Zone Christmas Dinner which was catered by Homburger Hof. The authentic German wiener schnitzel with mushroom gravy and boiled potatoes exceeded our expectations. The Events Committee did a wonderful job with the planning and execution to make this a great dining experience.
A delicious salad was prepared by Sister Richards and Sister Anderson provided a delightful dessert.

We were disappointed that we couldn’t all be together, but we did the best we could with the restrictions of no more than two family units meeting together. A few couples decided to eat on their own.

Christmas Day

Our breakfast consisted of some pastries from a local Bäckerei and homemade eggnog and
Santa had filled our stockings with some fun little goodies.

Darci and Candice worked their magic and sent us this fun pillow filled with love and hugs.
It was our only present to open on Christmas Day. We had gifted each picked out gifts earlier that were not surprises, like our Christmas Pyramid and Dave's hunting stand and Joanne's beautiful necklace.

We don't want to forget our cozy little apartment and our fun Christmas decorations.

Christmas Eve

Will and Val had invited us to London for Christmas and we were so excited to be with them.
But as the time got closer, we realized we wouldn't be able to travel. The travel corridor between Germany and the UK closed forcing us to stay in Frankfurt.

The only bright spot was that we were able to spend Christmas Eve with them via Zoom
and be part of their Christmas program.

Then they had us prop up our phone on the computer with WhatsApp queued up so that the rest of the family could watch our reaction as watched a video that Will had compiled...

Each family member recited a line from the story...from youngest to oldest...

T 'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a luster of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,

With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;

So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes - how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was a white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him in spike of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings, and turned with a jerk;

And laying a finger aside of his nose;
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle,

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight-
"Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night!"
