Treasured Experience #3

Elder H.

One day I received a whole pile of emails from Church Headquarters about a missionary in one of the European missions I don’t have responsibility for. He had made some serious mistakes on his mission and they were about ready to send him home.  Normally, I wouldn’t have been involved in his case.

The coordinator for the mental health adviser program throughout the world remembered that this missionary’s challenge was directly in-line with one of my specialties as a counselor.  I was then asked to get involved, to meet with the missionary, assess him and offer a diagnosis.

Out of that effort and some subsequent counseling sessions, this missionary was able to stay on his mission rather than go home 16 months early.

Once again, I see the hand of the Lord in the lives of each of us.  I was in Europe at a time there was a need, with special qualifications to help a young elder that would have been sent home otherwise.  The Holy Spirit inspired the coordinator in Salt Lake City to reach out to me and everything fell into place.  The missionary learned some valuable life lessons, is experiencing the beauty of the Atonement and gets to stay and serve the Lord on his mission.

This is why I chose to serve, small things I can offer that can potentially change the course of this missionary’s life.  I thank God every day for the opportunity we have to serve on our missions.
